How to Get a Marriage License in Huntsville
Alabama uses a unique marriage system. There are no marriage licenses. Instead, you file a marriage license. No ceremony is required. No officiant is needed. The process is simple.
First, download the marriage license form from the Alabama Department of Public Health. The form is at dph1.adph.state.al.us/marriage. You must type the form. Handwritten forms are not accepted. Both parties complete their sections of the form.
Next, both parties must sign the form. Each signature must be notarized by an Alabama notary public. Out-of-state notarization is not valid. Many banks, law offices, and shipping stores offer notary services. Madison County staff cannot notarize your form.
Then, file the completed form at the Probate Court. You have 30 days from the last signature to file. The fee is $89. Cash and cards are accepted. Certified checks work for mail-in requests. The marriage is legal on the date of the last signature, not the filing date.

Alabama Marriage License Laws
Alabama changed its marriage system in 2019. The state now uses marriage licenses instead of licenses. This is under Alabama Code Section 30-1-9.1. The law took effect on August 29, 2019.
Key rules for marriage in Alabama:

- Both signatures must be notarized by an Alabama notary
- The form must be filed within 30 days of the last signature
